Permits issued at historic level Lack of future developers causes concern
Despite supply shortages and other factors, issued building permits have seen a steady increase over the last five years in the city of Montgomery, even reaching a new record in 2021, according to a recent report released by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
In 2021, the city issued a total of 195 permits, up 51 from the previous year, and about 20 more than the peak number of permits issued in 2012.
“There has been a lot more activity,” said Joshua Mankowski, Montgomery City Planner. “We’re doing a lot more activity, and that’s really been picking up as everybody kind of knows, even with the supply shortages we’ve been seeing.”
Year to year the city tracks various types of permits being issued, including additions, re-reroofing projects, new residential construction, demolitions, and more.
In 2021 zoning permits increased nearly 400 percent, rising to 53 compared to the previous year when there were 11.
The number of re-roof projects also increased over 100 percent at 35 permits compared to the 2020 total of 17.
