Success on the mat

The Tri-City United Wrestling Program added podium success with two athletes finishing in third place last weekend at the State Wrestling Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

In Round 1 of the 170-pound weight class, Caden O’Malley advanced with a technical fall over Guinahi Douhe of Fridley. In thequarterfinals, O’Malley beat Ashton LaBelle of North Branch Area with a 1-0 decision.

The consolation semifinals O’Malley beat Johnathon Murphy of Big Lake with a fall in 25 seconds.

Battling for third place, O’Malley faced off again with LaBelle who had defeated Dusty Wilke of Grand Rapids with a 3-2 decision. O’Malley earned his place on the podium with a 3-0 decision victory.

“Caden was aggressive and physical at state,” said his coach Shaun Timmerman. “He wrestled smart and was only taken down one time all tournament. I think he realized how good he is and is ready to compete for a state title next year.”
