Barten Breakfast to benefit 3-year-old

This Sunday, March 20, the 14th annual Roman Barten Memorial Breakfast will benefit Emma Burns, age 3, daughter of David and Carissa Burns of rural Henderson. The breakfast of pancakes, sausages and cinnamon rolls will be held from 8 am. to 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 411 Fourth Ave. SW in New Prague and it is a free will donation.

When Emma was five months old she was diagnosed with Aicardi Syndrome and epilepsy, which causes her to experience 50 to more than 100 seizures a day, despite brain surgery, an implant and trialing many medications. Emma has also endured many emergency room visits and multiple day hospitalizations. While Emma receives speech, occupational and physical therapies, she is still curious, determined and happy.

“Honestly we were honored and surprised,” said David about their family, including Emma’s little sister Ellie, age 2, being chosen this year. He noted they were nominated by two people.

“It’s very humbling,” said Carissa. She said when they first met Fran Barten and her family they learned the history of how the Bartens are continuing Roman’s legacy of service to the community. The couple describes Fran Barten as sweet and selfless.

David said they were impressed with how Fran and her children come together to put on the breakfast. “We’ll likely be volunteers from here on for it,” said David. “It’s just fantastic.”
