Breakfast reveals local changes at Mayo Clinic

Approximately 45 people from New Prague and other area communities attended the annual Stakeholder’s Breakfast at the Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague’s Jameen Mape room to learn what is happening at the local health care facility.

Among those speaking were Dr. James Hebl, vice president of the Southwest Region for MCHS, Terry Brandt, administrator for the region, and Heather Tietz, community relations officer. In addition, Kirby Johnson, the new administrator for the local hospital, was introduced.

A power point presentation talked about the Mayo Clinic and its various entities. Nationwide, Mayo employs more than 60,000 people. Mayo Clinic Health System is a group of 17 hospitals and 46 clinics in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Northern Iowa. There are four regions, and New Prague is in the Southwest Minnesota Region, which includes six hospitals and 22 clinics. Hospitals are located in New Prague, Waseca, St. James, Springfield, Fairmont and Mankato.

Hebl said that Mayo uses an integrated model to provide services. “We can’t be all things to all communities,” he explained, saying that services that cannot be provided at local clinics and hospitals are available at Mankato, and that, in turn, the Mankato facility has access to doctors and services in Rochester.

They also talked about the “Plummer Project,” in which all Mayo facilities will have access to the same integrated health records of its patients. They began rolling out the system in July, 2017, and expect to have all facilities on board by October of 2018.
