Czech May Day Celebration this Sunday

The Montgomery Area Community Club will host Czech May Day on Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. in Heritage Park in Montgomery, with a rainout date of May 13.

The fifth annual event welcomes in spring and features the raising of the Czech May Pole, a 20-30 foot pine tree with all the branches removed except for the very top, leaving a “Christmas Tree,” with ribbons and flowers. Ribbon dances will happen around the May Pole after it is raised.

This family orientated event will include music from the Czech Area Concertina Club, dancing by the St. Paul Czech and Slovak Folk Dancers as well as the Sokol Minnesota Children and Teen Dancers, a children’s May Pole, children’s activities and a baked goods sale. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Some of the items available will include pork, dumplings, sauerkraut, gravy, halušky (tiny dumplings), vomacka, zelnicky, Czech hot dogs and Czech beer.
