Fishing with Minnesota Vikings brings smiles and laughter

Whether it was being out on the lake fishing or meeting a Minnesota Vikings player, smiles abounded on the faces of 50 area youth as they took to Lake German and Lake Jefferson on Saturday in the Youth Fishing Outing.

“I liked meeting the rookies,” said participant Brendan Germscheid, 11. “We caught a lot of fish. I wish we could have cut them up and ate them.”

The event, sponsored by the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, began in 2001, making this the 17th season bringing the Posse and youth ages eight to 15 together on the lakes.

Former Le Sueur County Sheriff David Gliszinski said he started it as a way to provide a fun outdoor summer activity for the youth. “It’s a big hit with the kids and the Posse,” said Gliszinski. “Why quit a good thing.”

Saturday’s event began with a class led by Le Sueur County Sheriff Brett Mason and the water patrol on boat and water safety, which included wearing life jackets.

Mason said that the biggest key to wearing the best and safest life jacket is making sure that it fits properly. Every child needs their own life jacket that’s specifically fitted for them and adjusted based on their size and weight as they grow.

“Accidents can happen,” he said. “It’s important to have the life jacket on.”

When class was over the youth hit the water on 15 pontoons that included a boat captain, other adults and players and staff from the Minnesota Vikings.

Mason said that the event had a threefold purpose. The first and foremost was to have fun.
