Irish builds big lead, holds off Hampton

St. Patrick built an early lead and then held off Hampton Sunday afternoon, June 30, at Bonin Field.

The Irish took a 5-0 lead with two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth frame. Hampton rallied with a three tallies in the sixth inning before St. Patrick upped its lead to 6-2 with a solo run in the home half of the eighth inning, a run that provided to be the game-winner for the home team.

The Cardinals mounted a last-ditch rally in the ninth, scoring three times. But the Irish snuffed out the rally and claimed the win. Ryan Friedges claimed the win, pitching seven innings with help from relievers Zak Endres and Alec Golcomb.

They both worked an inning. The Irish pitchers allowed 13 hits but also stranded 11 Hampton runners.

The Irish managed six runs with only three hits and seven walks. They also took advantage of a pair of Hampton miscues. Jack Friedges, Ryan Friedges and Ryan Wickman had hits for the Irish. Hunter Even walked twice while Zach Stroh, Ryan Friedges, Cam Kline, Tate Even and Nate Klehr also reached base via the free pass.

Stroh, Ryan Friedges, Jack Friedges, Wickman, Kal Brohmer and Tate Even all crossed the plate for St. Patrick. Jack Friedges and Cam Kline were credited with two RBI apiece. Wickman was also credited with driving in an earned run.

The Irish will host Elko to Bonin Field Sunday, July 7, 2 p.m. They will travel to Northfield Friday, July 12, 7:30 p.m., to face the Knights.

Orioles 2, Faribault 1 The Orioles defeated Faribault in a pitchers' duel Sunday, June 30, at Memorial Park. The Orioles’ James Fuerniss pitched eight innings and struck out 10, allowing, one unearned run. Jake Deutsch threw the final inning of the game to pick up the save. Joey Grote pitched for the Lakers and threw eight solid innings. He allowed two earned runs.

The O’s scored their runs when Fuerniss singled and then scored all the way from first on Dan Ring’s double. The next run also came after a Fuerniss single, followed by a single from Beau Plaisance and then a sacrifice fly from Aiden Dorzinski.

Faribualt's lone run came when Austin Rendler reached on an error, followed by hit from Dylan O'Neil and a sacrifice fly from Zander Fitzsimmons.

For the Orioles, Eric Wagner had a double. Deutsch and Aiden Dorzinski also had hits.

New Market 12, Orioles 1 New Market had the bats going early and often as the Muskies enjoyed a 10-run win over New Prague in eight innings Tuesday, May 25.

Joey Ernester got the win for New Market pitching six innings. Jake Lundquist had an RBI single for the Muskies and also scored three times from the leadoff spot.

Jackson Sirek started and took the loss for the Orioles. Beau Plaisance had three hits for New Prague.

Union Hill 4, Shakopee 1 Shakopee opened the game with hits from Ethan Butchel, Ben Fredenburg and Cole Leighton. Tanner Graff singled to bring in Butchel with the Coyotes’ lone run.

On the mound, Shakopee’s Jake Poppitz started the game with three straight 1-2-3 innings, but in the bottom of the fourth, Poppitz left a belt high change up to Conrad Mosberg for a two-run blast that proved to be the winning run. That score held until the bottom of the eighth when the Bulldogs added two insurance runs.

Shakopee started with off singles by Ethan Butchel, Ben Fredenburg, Cole Leighton. Tanner Graff singled to bring in Butchel in the top of the first.

Shakopee had no answer in the ninth inning. The Coyotes finished with six hits, and left eighth runners on base. Top performers for Shakopee were Jake Poppitz with eight innings pitched. He struck out four UH hitters, allowed one earned run and four runs total. Ben Fredenburg was 3-for-4 with a double.

Elko 4, Northfield 2 Alex Schneider pitched six inning, striking out six and walking one. He allowed two runs. Easton Richter pitched the remaining three hitless innings, striking out four.

Offensively, TJ Evanson paced the Express with two hits, including a home run. Elko’s Ryan Bastyr also had hits in the win.

The July 30 win improves the Express to 8-1 in Section 1B play and 15-5 overall. Elko defeated St. Benedict 6-3 on Wednesday night. Kyle Kraska had a two-run single for Elko. Alex Mizsak and Nolan Eischens worked five innings of scoreless relief for the Saints.

New Market 6, St. Benedict 1 New Market defeated St. Benedict Friday evening, June 28. Tyler Bergstrom got the win on the mound for the Muskies. Alex Donkers only yielded one run in five innings for St. Benedict.

Union Hill 6, St. Benedict 4 The Bulldogs’ Charlie Otteson worked six innings for the win Saturday, June 29. Will Seymour earned the nineout save. Derek Albers had a two-run double for the Saints.

Lonsdale 7, St. Benedict 0 Lonsdale blanked St. Benedict Sunday, June 30. Derek Albers had three hits for the Saints. Matthias Duevel and Albers pitched the final five innings giving up zero earned runs for St. Benedict

Prior Lake 6, Webster 4 Taking advantage of three errors, the Mudcats built a 5-0 lead and then held off Webster’s efforts to battle back and claim the win Sunday, June 30, in Prior Lake.

Prior Lake played small ball to take a 4-0 lead. Two infield hits, a stolen base, a misplayed sacrifice bunt and a base hit gave the Mudcats a 3-0 lead in the first inning with Charlie Bredeson, Cole Clausen and Ryan Wattermann crossing the plate. They added a fourth run in the second in similar fashion, with Bear Blaney scoring on Alex Wattermann’s sacrifice fly.

In the third frame, Jerad Lehre walked, advanced on Linus Fleek’s base hit and scored on Bear Blaney’s base hit to give the Mudcats a 5-0 lead.

Webster cut Prior Lake’s lead to 5-4 in the fourth inning. With one out, William Wareham singled, and Peter Grassl walked. They advanced when Max Drexl singled. After Chase Flaskey popped out, Ryan Joyner cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. Joyner steals third. Austin Isaacson’s single sent Joyner across the plate.

After the Mudcats upped their lead to 6-4 in the eighth inning when John Parker put down a squeeze bunt allowing Lehrer to score, Webster offered a last-ditch comeback effort. It ended with a diving catch and a double play.

Prior Lake outhit the Sox, 8-7. Fleek paced the Mudcats with three hits and Blaney added two. Lehrer scored twice.

Webster’s Brooks Prochaska had three hits and Warehem added two. Joyner drove in three RBI and Isaacson added another RBI in the game.

Mallards go 3-0 on the week, win annual Bonnie Bash Tournament

The Mallards this week, starting off the week with a league win and finishing it with a championship game in the Bonnie Bash Tournament.

Mallards 2, Veseli 0 The Mallards and Veseli Warriors squared off for a mid-week duel last Wednesday, June 27, and for the majority of the game, the pitchers stole the show.

Ted Christian started on the mound and after giving up a run on no hits in the first inning, overwhelming the Warrior hitters all night. Christian pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six, giving way to Ben Anderson in the eighth after a one out walk.

Anderson allowed no hits and struck out 4 in his 1 2/3 innings of work, extending his scoreless streak to 10 1/3 innings of relief.

However, Warriors’ starter Nate Picka had the Mallards’ hitters off-balance, with the Mallards only getting singles from Cole Pint, Johnny Krocak and Dawson Pint through the first eight innings, only once advancing a runner beyond second base. However, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Iverson drew a walk and Matt Smith blasted a line drive over the left field fence for a two-run, walk-off home run.

The win moved the Mallards to 7-5 in league play just 2 games behind Union Hill and New Prague.

Mallards 7, Minneapolis Lyon’s Pub 0 On Sunday, June 30, the Mallards traveled to Missile Park in St. Bonifacius for the four-team, one day Bonnie Bash Tournament with the host St. Boni Saints, Veseli Warriors and Minneapolis Lyon’s Pub.

Montgomery drew Lyon’s Pub in the first round, the No. 2-ranked team in the MBA Class B rankings and 17-6 on the season.

The Mallards long ball picked up right where the previous game ended, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. A Nolan Readmond double started the game, followed by a Pat Lloyd walk and Ryan Iverson’s three-run blast. Montgomery added solo runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh frames on RBIs from Lloyd, Iverson and Kyle Hintz. Iverson led the charge going 2-4 with four RBI and a run scored.

Ben Anderson, Jack Barnett and Derek Christenson teamed up on the mound, allowing only 4 hits on the day and striking out eight. Barnett picked up the win going four innings, allowing no hits and striking out 8.

Mallards 7, St. Bonifacius 3 After a couple hour break, the Mallards faced the host team in the Championship game at 6 p.m. Sunday evening, June 30.

The Saints struck first getting one in the bottom of the first but the Mallards tied it up in the second when starting pitcher Max Krautkremer drove in Matt Smith. The Saints pulled ahead by 1 in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Mallards answered with 4 in the top of the third to pull away. In the third, another Ryan Iverson double drove in Pay Lloyd, followed by an RBI single from Smith and a towering 2-run home from Ben Anderson. The Mallards added 2 insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Mike Flicek double and Jack Barnett single, but the extra runs weren’t necessary.
