One week to play in DRS – St. Patrick clinches No. 1 playoff seed

With one week to play, the final games of the DRS Amateur Baseball League schedule will be very important for playoff seeding.

St. Patrick (17-4 record) has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Region 3C Tournament, which will begin Sunday, August 8. Union Hill (14-7) and Faribault (12-8) have clinched league playoff byes. There are five byes available and five teams will be battling this week for those spots.

Montgomery (11-8), New Prague (11-9), St. Benedict (10-12), Lonsdale (9-11), and Prior Lake (9-11) are all in contention for the final two first round playoff byes.

The bottom six teams in the DRS standings will play a best of three series in order to move on to the Region 3C Tournament. These games will be played Tuesday, Aug. 3 and August 5 and Friday Aug. 6 or Saturday, Aug. 7 if needed.

Webster (8-13), Veseli (2-18), and Shakopee (2-18) are the final three teams in the DRS standings and will play in the best of three series against a team yet to be determined.

The week started Wednesday, July 21 with Union Hill downing Prior Lake, 9-2. The Bulldogs allowed only two hits, both by Patrick Barrett. Nathan Berg and Adam Giesen had two hits each for Union Hill. Berg pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the victory. Conrad Masberg started and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits.

The following night, the Bulldogs claimed a 15-5 win over Shakopee. Will Busch and Nate Lee each collected three hits. Jack Giesen and Berg had two hits each. Busch hit a triple and Berg a home run. Joe Becker started and completed seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. He struck out 11 and walked two. Jeff Hohenstein had two hits for Shakopee.

New Prague picked up a win Friday, July 23, downing Veseli, 6-0. Bryce Novak was the winning pitcher and also added three hits, as did Eric Wagner. James Fuerniss and Gavin Bergmann added two hits each.

Games Saturday included St. Benedict knocking off Faribault, 6-4 and New Market hitting six home runs in a 15-4 win over Prior Lake. St. Patrick picked up a 13-4 non-league win over Waseca.

There were six games played Sunday, July 25. Lonsdale picked up a big win, edging Union Hill, 13-11 in 11 innings. Zach Breedan hit a walk-off home run in the 11th. Devin Vosejpka hit his first home run and Jack Skluzacek also hit a long ball. Adam Fjerstad allowed only two hits in four innings of relief to earn the win. Will Busch had three hits and Jacob Becker, Derek Masberg, and Cody Shimota had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Other games included Shakopee downing Veseli, 7-5, Webster collecting 13 hits in a 9-8 win over New Prague, St. Patrick defeated St. Benedict, 13-1 in seven innings, and Elko and New Market each picked up non-league wins.

In the Irish win over the Saints, Luke Tupy earned the victory, allowing one unearned run on four hits. He struck out 11 and walked two in six innings. Jack Friedges had a home run, a double, and had four RBI. Ryan Friedges hit a home run among his three hits. Kyle Rhodus and Jace Westman each added two hits. Jonathan Buss had two of the four Saint’s hits.
