Sonia H. Funk, 94

Sonia H. Funk, age 94, of New Prague, formerly of Minnetonka, died peacefully with her family at her side, on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Traditions of Montgomery. Sonia was born on February 4, 1928 in Minneapolis to William E. and Signe B. (Peterson) Hovey. She was raised in the Camden area of Minneapolis, graduating from Patrick Henry High School. She married Raymond A. Funk on September 6, 1947 in Minneapolis and in her first years of marriage, she worked for the phone company. When her daughter, Susan, was born, Sonia became a dedicated mother and homemaker and served as a Girl Scout leader. She was a lifelong member of North Methodist Church in North Minneapolis and a dedicated volunteer. In her later years, she worked for JFCS (Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Minneapolis) and thoroughly enjoyed her time with them taking senior citizens grocery shopping.

Sonia was a bright and optimistic spirit, with an infectious personality that drew people to her and found children of all ages flocking to her. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and supporting them in all their activities. She became known as the “candy grandma” when she supplied candy to all the kids participating in the Catholic school marathons. She was totally dedicated and in love with her Irish Setters. She enjoyed knitting and loved to read, particularly mysteries, and especially the daily paper, supplied by her son-in-law along with a donut. Summers could find her traveling to the log cabin “up north” in Hackensack, which she and Raymond built and has been in the family over 70 years. Sonia was known to be the first to enter the water when the summer season started, Raymond joking that she was even pushing the ice out of the way! Her warmth and smile will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Sonia is survived by her daughter, Susan (Gary) Odenthal of New Prague; grandchildren, Jessica (Eric) Hammerberg, Jacob (Connie) Odenthal, Jenna (Bradley) Heimer; great-grandchildren, Evan, Charlotte, Connor, Ellarie, William, Joseph, Miles, Elise, Irene, & Margaret. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on February 8, 2003; parents; brother, William Hovey; sisters, Mary Simmons & Sidney Van Korsel.brother, William Hovey; sisters, Mary Simmons & Sidney Van Korsel.
