Stanley Francis Handsuch, 94, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife at their home in Hill City, MN.
Stanley was born on January 21, 1930, in New Prague, MN, to William and Mary Handsuch. He graduated from Montgomery High School in 1948. From 1948 to 1952, Stanley served in the United States Navy with the 1st Marine Division as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman, Seaman First Class, during the Korean War, and was a survivor of the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Stanley had two children: Patti Heil DeLuca and Lawrence Handsuch. From 1962 until his retirement in 1987, he was employed as a machinist with International Multifoods in New Prague, MN. In 1974, he was united in marriage with Delores “Cookie” Speikers in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a devoted husband, father, and stepfather.
Stanley was very passionate about fishing and also enjoyed hunting, gardening, and reading.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Handsuch; grandson Isaac Heil; brother John Handsuch; and sisters Dorothy (Lloyd) Svoboda and Mary Ann McDonald.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Delores “Cookie” Handsuch, of 50 years; children, Lawrence (Edith) Handsuch and Patti (Troy Summers) Heil DeLuca; stepchildren, Dan (Julie) Speikers, David (Melissa Doolittle) Speikers, and Duane (Lisa) Speikers; one granddaughter, Chiara; seven step-grandchildren, Christopher, Joseph (Stephanie), Devin, Alec, Samantha, Ethan, and Grace; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hill City Assembly of God Church in Hill City, MN, with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lisa Jordan officiating.
Committal services will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Duluth with military honors.
