All girls wrestling team has fantastic first season

They may be young, but New Prague’s first all girls wrestling team shows a lot of promise. With around 23 members from kindergarten to sixth grade these young grapplers had a fantastic first season.

“We have ten girls who will compete in the girls state tournament this year,” said Simon Kallal, head coach of the team. He and his wife Sarah helped organize the team.

The couple moved to New Prague with their daughter, Azalea, who had wrestled on co-ed teams since she was four years old. “We always knew it would be really great to eventually help start an all-girls wrestling team here in New Prague,” said Simon. “We knew a lot of girls that had interest in the sport, but that weren't necessarily comfortable wrestling boys.”

They approached New Prague High School Wrestling Coach Dan Wagner and New Prague Wrestling Booster Club President Dan Novak about organizing a girls team. Simon said the two welcomed the idea with incredible support.

“When registration opened up, we had a pretty incredible turnout,” said Simon, adding they had more than 23 girls register. The program is run through New Prague Community Education, is for K-6th grade and is under the umbrella of New Prague Wrestling. The girls season runs from...
