Bernadine D. Svoboda, 89

Bernadine D. Svoboda, age 89, of New Prague, died peacefully, with her family at her side on Monday, March 6, 2023, at Mala Strana Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Bernadine was born on June 14, 1933 in Helena Township, Scott County to Wenceslaus J. and Anna M. (Simon) Kubes, Sr.  She grew up in rural New Prague, attended country district school, and graduated from New Prague High School.    She married William J. Svoboda on June 16, 1955 at St. Wenceslaus Church. Bernadine was not afraid of hard work and balanced being a farm housewife, raising seven children, and working outside of the home with apparent ease.  Her love of cooking and baking found a natural ability in the jobs she found throughout her life.  She worked for a time at Burnsville Bowl, followed by 26 years as a cook at the Lakeville VFW.  She also was a favorite at Schumacher’s New Prague Hotel and finally graced Patty’s Place, finally retiring at age 84.

Bernadine’s faith was instrumental in her life.  That faith was tested with tragedy when she had to bury two daughters later in life.  She carried these crosses with grace and resilience.  She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, taught religion classes there, and was active in the Christian Mothers group.  She was a 4-H Health Champion in her younger years.  She enjoyed board games, and especially a good game of Euchre and the occasional trip to a casino.  Her greatest joy came in any activity that included her family.  She was the heart of the family and family was her heart!  Her can-do attitude, her positivity, and her hugs will be missed by all.

Bernadine is survived by her children, Ed (Anne) Svoboda of Lonsdale, Dorothy (Jack) Tuma of Lonsdale, Bill (Kathy) Svoboda of New Prague, Charlotte (Vern) Trcka of Montgomery, Betty Svoboda (special friend, Doug Johnson) of Montgomery; sons-in-law, Charlie Sticha of Webster and Norbert Sticha of Montgomery; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchidren; brother, Wally (Jeanne) Kubes of New Prague; brother-in-law, Lawrence Schoenbauer of New Prague; sisters-in-law, Teresa Holzer of Jordan, Pat Kubes of New Prague, Mary Jo Kubes of New Prague, Mary Lou Kubes of Arizona.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill on December 29, 2007; parents; daughters, Shirley Sticha and Cathy Sticha; siblings, Janice Smisek, Eugenia Ziskovsky, Mae Ann Schoenbauer, Wencel Jr., Arnold, John, Wayne, Carol Ann Kubes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 at 10 AM at St. Wenceslaus Church with Father Eugene Theisen officiating.  Visitation will take place on Sunday from 3-7 PM and Monday morning from 7:30 – 9:30 AM at Bruzek Funeral Home.  Burial will occur at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery followed by lunch at the KC Hall.
