Boys’ spikers take silver at Mound Westonka tourney

New Prague’s boys’ volleyball team had a good week. While the Trojans started with a loss against Bloomington Jefferson, Tuesday, May 13, it kept the match close, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-19. New Prague turned around and beat Chaska/Chanhassen 26-24, 22-25, 28-26 and 25-9, Thursday, May 15. The Trojans then participated in the Mound Westonka tournament Saturday, May 17, where New Prague took the Silver Bracket Championship, finishing fifth out of 12 teams.

New Prague now has a 10-14 overall record, 3-3 in the Metro West Conference, with two conference matches remaining in the regular season. The first was Tuesday, May 20, the Trojans were at at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, results unavailable as of press time. Today (Thursday) New Prague hosts Mound Westonka at 7 p.m. as the Trojans will have Senior Night.

Bloomington Jefferson 3-0 “We started out the week by playing the No. 1 team in the state on the road,” said New Prague head coach Greg Sayuk. “Since we played them tough a couple of weeks ago, they certainly didn't take us lightly or let down at any point in the match.”

Freshman setter Cole Hatlevig had seven assists, senior libero Mason Noble had four digs and senior outside hitter Adam Proshek had four kills. Senior middle hitter Tommy Christensen had two kills, junior outside hitter Max Wilson had two aces, senior Will Radermacher had two digs and two blocks and senior right side hitter Carter Miller had two kills.

“We played fairly well - especially passing - but they have so much firepower, we just couldn't keep up,” said Sayuk.

Trojans 3-1 “After taking down Chaska/Chanhassen easily on the road last month, they came into this game much improved on defense and serve receive,” said Sayuk. “We were featuring a couple of new starters on the court for various reasons, so we were a little out of sorts splitting the first two sets.”

New Prague won the first set 26-24, but the Stormhawks swooped in to win the next set 25- 22.
