Building memories and 5,000th box for wood ducks

Sunday, Feb. 27, was busy for the Scott - Le Sueur Waterfowlers during their 22nd Annual Youth Wood Duck Box Building Day as families came out to build nesting boxes for wood ducks and one youngster built box number 5,000.

Teagan Ihnen of New Prague had the honor of putting together the 5,000th box with the help of volunteer Louie Schatz. She had looks of concentration as she screwed in the bolts with an electric screwdriver, with Schatz guiding her. When asked about making box 5,000 she said she was “Very proud.” She already had plans on where she would put the box. “I’ll probably put it on a tree by the lake,” said Ihnen, adding there was a lake near where she lives.

“It’s been a busy day,” said Scott - Le Sueur Waterfowlers President Andrew Harms. For the day they had 283 youth stop in. “We were hoping for that,” said Harms about the turnout. “It got busy quick,” he said. “We opened the doors at 9:30 and didn’t have a table open until 11:30. Nobody had to wait for more than 15 minutes to build a box.”
