City’s newest sports bar gets OK for liquor licenses

New Prague’s newest business, "Czech’ers Sports Bar, LLC, received approval for its on and off sale liquor licenses and dance permit from the New Prague City Council at its Monday, July 2, meeting. The business at 125 Main St. will be operated by Rich and Cheryl Novak. It was the former JT’s Hideaway, which has been closed since January 2017.

In their application the Novaks proposed the business would begin operation on or after August 1 of this year. The licenses will run from August 1, 2018 and expire on March 31, 2019. Police Chief Jim Gareis conducted a background check on the applicants, with nothing to disqualify them and he recommended approval.

City staff recommended approval with two conditions. The first was that the licenses premises only be for the first floor of the building, excluding the second floor, which is proposed to be a residential rental unit, and 196 square feet of the southeast corner of the building, which is leased as a barber shop. The access between the bar and the barber shop shall be secured at all time, except for the use of the restroom when needed. The second was that the bar’s Sunday liquor license not be issued and the business not be allowed to be open on Sundays until a copy of the business’ health license be provided to the city.

During the public hearing for the licenses, Rich Novak explained he called the Minnesota Department of Health to inspect the building. To his surprise they treated the entire building as if it was a full kitchen, even though he plans to only serve some sandwiches and pizza like similar establishments in the community.
