Dorothy Marie Loney, 88

Dorothy Marie Loney, age 88, of New Prague, died unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, December 29, 2022.  Dorothy was born on February 15, 1934 in St. Paul to John and Hedwig (Nauman) Denninger.  She graduated from Harding High School, 10th out of 250 in her class.  She was dedicated to education and accomplished a degree in nursing despite little encouragement from her parents.  She worked at various facilities throughout her life.  In her second year of nursing school, Dorothy decided to go home to Le Center with one of her friends.  Dorothy and her friend went out that night and Dorothy’s life forever changed!  She met a young man from Le Center named Herb Loney and the two talked the whole night.  The next day Herb took Dorothy to Hartegers for a dance and when she returned to college, they exchanged numbers. When summer arrived, Herb traveled to St. Paul every weekend to spend it with Dorothy.  One night, upon returning from a movie, Herb proposed and Dorothy said yes.   Herb was the love of her life and they were married February 23, 1957 in St. Paul.  She remained devoted to him, making sure she visited him almost daily when Alzheimers disease necessitated a move to the nursing home.

She was a woman of many interests.  She was a figure skater in her younger years and enjoyed nothing more than going to the Ice Capades in St. Paul.  She was influential in her grandchildren’s lives with her devotion to them.  She taught them manners and etiquette and always made time for them.

Service was Dorothy’s life!  Her nursing career began it but she remained dedicated to reaching out to others in everything she did.  She was very involved in the Ladies Aid group at her church and was a prolific quilter, seamstress, and knitter.  She wrote grants to Thrivent for her knitting group, the “Community Creators”, to fund the yarn used for their projects.  Most of her craftsmanship was predominantly donated to NICUs and cancer centers, onesies for premies and chemo hats for cancer patients.  Dorothy was kind and quiet, never drawing attention to herself but the footprint she left was huge.  Her legacy was service personified.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Julie (Jim) Stark of Savage, Jill Loney (Robin Mc Cullough) of Jordan, Jeffrey Loney of New Prague; grandchildren, Samantha, Sarah, & Caleb; sister-in-law, Harriet Loney of Le Center; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Herb on November 24, 2016; parents; brother, John “Jack” Denninger.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lanesburgh (rural New Prague) with Pastor Henry Koch officiating.  Visitation will take place at church from 9-11.  Lunch will be served in the church social hall following the service.  Burial will occur in the church cemetery at a later date.  bruzekfuneralhome.com
