Doubles teams do well in tennis opener

The New Prague Trojan tennis team opened its season Friday, Sept. 17, competing at the Mankato East Invitational. The Trojans finished fourth of seven teams. Le Sueur-Henderson won the championship with 31 wins, Totino-Grace was second with 30 and Mankato East took third with 29. New Prague had 19, with New Ulm and Sibley East tied for fifth at 17 and Austin seventh with 11.

“It was great to get out and see us compete for the first time,” said Trojan Coach Luke Swedberg, who had accepted the head coaching job just a week before the team’s first meet. “We have not had that much time to practice and evaluate, but being thrown into competition right away kind of shows you what you are made of.”

Swedberg said the doubles teams played strong throughout the tournament. The team of Sarah Berg and Brenna Solheid finished first among the No. 3 doubles teams at 5- 1. Victoria Bisek and Maggie Nielsen also went 5-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Emily Russo and Maddie Dorner went 4-2.
