ENM Council begins site work for new water tower

The Elko New Market City Council authorized a study by Bolton & Menk, the city’s engineering firm, to evaluate three sites and to recommend a final site for a proposed new water tower, which will help increase the city’s elevated water storage capacity. The work will also include an update to the city’s digital water system model.
City Administrator Tom Terry said this was part of a program to update the city’s infrastructure, which includes work to update the city’s power and water plants.
City Engineer Rich Revering of Bolton & Menk said the proposed new water tower will provide more water storage. He gave as an example of how it will help is if the fire department needs water to fight a fire. He said finding the right site and what the capacity of the new water tower will be will take time, which is why they are proposing to begin the work now.
Councilor Amanda Novak why a water tower was being considered instead of an underground system. Revering replied gravity pumps will help push the water down and will continue working if there is power outage.
