Handing out poppies a way to remember those who served, gave all

She’s one of many people who feel a strong sense of gratitude and respect for members of the military who sacrificed their lives and defended the nation. Mary Pierce is one of the people who takes the time to make sure those people are remembered.
Throughout May, Pierce has been handing out poppies members of the New Prague American Legion Auxiliary Unit 45 made. A group of unit members gathered earlier this month and made about 1,000 poppies. Pierce has logged several hours at Coborn’s Marketplace this month. Between 15 and 20 auxiliary members will be at local businesses in New Prague this week handing out the paper flowers and accepting donations. They’ll also be in Jordan since it doesn’t have an auxiliary unit, said Linda Dvorak, president of the New Prague American Legion Auxiliary. The group aims to raise about $5,000 for veterans and their families, she said.
The money donated for poppies goes to help veterans and their families, Pierce said. “This is a way I can serve veterans. It’s a way I can give back,” she said.
