Honoring our veterans, celebrating the graduates

Two events that are important for many people around the area are happening this weekend. This coming Friday, May 28, is New Prague High School’s graduation ceremony and on Monday, May 31, it is Memorial Day when we honor those veterans who gave all for our country.

As I was growing up Memorial Day didn’t seem to be observed as much, or it could have been, but my family didn’t attend the ceremonies. I remember going to one church service in the local cemetery. More often than not it was a weekend when my family gathered.

After I moved to New Prague more than 21 years ago I saw how much Memorial Day was celebrated, how for many it was one of the community events that was part of their life and their families.

Graduation
Graduation is also another aspect that is a big part of the community and for families. This Sunday’s Graduation Parade proved that as I was able to drive around and see groups of families gathered waiting for the parade to come by or they had lawn chairs lined up, ready for the event. Someone thought there were fewer groups out this year, compared to last year, but that might be in the eye of the beholder.

My high school graduation was one that I remember pieces of. We gathered in the local hockey arena, as it was one of the larger structures in Thief River Falls. We had two classmates who spoke of our past and our future, we had a featured speaker about what awaited us and we had music from the band and choir.

As I get older I’m struck by the students who know what they want to do and then set out to get it.

Whether you have a graduation or are honoring those veterans who gave all, may you enjoy this weekend.
