It’s time to be heard

Chuck Kajer, The New Prague Times

We are less than three weeks from Election Day, and in this week’s issue of The New Prague Times we are presenting our Voter’s Guide, with information on the candidates for local races for the Minnesota Legislature, county boards, city councils and school board.

We encourage every citizen to exercise their constitutional right to vote. While it is too late to register in advance (the deadline was October 17, 21 days before election day), you can still vote by registering at your polling place on Election Day. If you are not able to go to the polls on Election Day, you can cast an absentee ballot. You can request a ballot online at the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website ( or by contacting your county elections office.

Many people feel that voting is a waste of time, that their vote doesn’t matter. Minnesota has had several very close elections over the past 10 years, most notably the Franken-Coleman election in 2008, in which a recount determined that Franken won by about 300 votes. David Bly, a legislator representing this area, lost reelection by 37 votes in 2010 to Kelby Woodard, and many other close elections have occurred statewide that could have swung the other way with a handful of votes.

Voters help determine the course of action for the government. They decide who will go to the board room, the city hall, the county courthouse, the state capitol or to Washington DC to make decisions on our behalf. It is your opportunity to have a say what direction you want the government to go and your chance to make a difference.

In many parts of the world, people do not have the opportunity to cast a ballot and make their voices heard. Some have tried to change that, and sometimes they are imprisoned or even killed while trying to earn that right. Americans have a duty to honor the men and women who fought for this nation’s freedom and for their rights.
