It's County Fair season!

Next week, Tuesday, July 16, marks the beginning of County Fair season in the area. The Rice County Fair begins its six-day run in Faribault. The Scott County Fair will be held a week later, starting Wednesday, July 24, for five days in Jordan, and the Le Sueur County Fair will be held three weeks after that, starting Thursday, Aug. 15, for four days in Le Center.

Some elements of the fairs have changed over the years, but for many, it’s a place to gather with neighbors and people from throughout the area, celebrate the rural way of life and find out what’s new.

Area businesses have booths that showcase what they have to offer. Service organizations not only promote themselves, but they serve as well, taking turns in different booths. There are games, prizes, rides, music and so many choices for food and drink. There are musical performances, demo derbies, motorcycle races and more.

But for many, the county fair is about the rural lifestyle. During a time when it’s becoming economically more difficult to earn a living on a farm, farm families will gather and celebrate the tradition. Youngsters will show off their livestock, their projects or their skills in 4-H competitions, hoping to earn that coveted ribbon and - hopefully - a trip to the State Fair.

If you get a chance, take your family on a trip to one of the upcoming county fairs in Faribault, Jordan or Le Center - or even all three. You’re bound to find something that will interest you. Grab a milk shake, a pork burger or corn dog, sit down and watch one of the many shows and exhibits. Enjoy the petting zoos, tour the livestock barns, check out the different competitions and go on one of the rides. You might even leave with a smile on your face!
