Kathleen L. “Kathy” Handzlik, 78

Kathleen L. “Kathy” Handzlik, age 78, of New Prague, died peacefully at home with her family at her side on Monday, September 30, 2024.  Kathy was born on April 15, 1946, in St. Paul, to Joseph and Evelyn (Waldo) Babic.  She graduated from Edina High School, earned her B.A. degree in Teaching from Mankato State College, and attained her Masters Degree from Hamline University.  Kathy taught 5th grade for the majority of her career in the Bloomington School District.  While living in an apartment complex in Lakeville, she immediately caught the eye of her neighbor, Harry Handzlik, and the two became best friends.  After 5 years of friendship, they became an “item”, both eventually moved to New Prague, and married on March 26, 2004, in Bloomington.

 Kathy’s eyes were truly the mirrors of her soul, exuding a gentle kindness and friendliness that made her a friend to everyone she met.  Her flower gardens were her life-blood and were admired by all who witnessed them.  She loved to cook and was famous for her chicken soup.  Kathy was a proud and active member of the Red Hat Club but the greatest joy in life came from the times spent with her grandchildren.  Her humble and sweet nature, and her beautiful smile will be missed by all who knew her.

 Kathy is survived by her devoted husband, Harry of New Prague; children, Eric (Suzan) Bonner of California, Trisha Skowronek of Apple Valley; step-son, Lawrence Handzlik of Montgomery; grandchildren, Matthew, Kathryn, Alexa, & Kayla; sister-in-law, Eva Babic.  She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Joel Babic; step-daughter, Andrea Handzlik.

 Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Bruzek Funeral Home with Father Kevin Clinton officiating.  Visitation will take place from 9:00 until Mass time.  Lunch will follow Mass at the Legion Clubroom and burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 1:30 that afternoon.
