Lonsdale council terminates employee, approves well payment for Well No. 5

The public works department was at the center of attention during most of the Lonsdale City Council meeting Thursday night.

The meeting began with an abrupt recess and closed council session with Lonsdale Public Works Department Director Russ Vlasak and Lonsdale City Administrator Joel Erickson to discuss a personnel matter.

Once the council reconvened, Erickson explained the reason for the closed sessions was in regard to the potential termination of an employee in the one-year probationary period of employment. He said that during the closed session the employee, Thomas Cassidy, was given the opportunity to speak and answer questions from the council. After the close sessoin, the council voted for termination.

Also during the meeting, there was a request by John Powell, Lonsdale's City Engineer, to pay $88,172.35 for the Well No. 5 Pump project.

Powell told the council that the work on the project by the contractors was not completed by the April 27 deadline and that work is still being done to complete it.

"Pember is actively working on the site and has indicated they expect to complete the work, including restoration, in the next two to three weeks," Powell said.

Powell explained that several factors played into the delay in completing the project, including not having equipment in time and then having a crew shortage once the equipment arrived.
