Richard E. Unger, 67

Richard E. Unger, age 67, of New Prague, died peacefully with his family at his side at home on Saturday, May 28, 2022.  Richard was born on May 20, 1955 in New Prague to Albert and Irene (Ambroz) Unger.  He graduated from New Prague High School and farmed for a short time before going to work at MVE/Chart, as a plumber/welder, the job he would hold for 32 years.  After that he worked in various factories until his cancer diagnosis.  After being good friends and kind of dating for 8 years, with just a little bit of a nudge, Richard married the love of his life, Nancy A. Dohmen on August 31, 1985 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill.

Richard was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a proud blood donor, and a dedicated member of the New Prague Pyrotechnic team; since the early 80’s, he was enthusiastically on the team bringing the annual 4th of July Fireworks.  Having enjoyed his years in 4H as a boy, he especially enjoyed helping his children with their 4H projects. He loved watching his daughter play high school hockey.  Richard was a man of many hobbies and interests.  He loved watching the Vikings, Twins, and other sports on TV.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, camping, baking, gardening, traveling, WWII history, and surfing the internet, and for awhile, enjoyed bartending for his father-in-law.   His absolute favorite activity, however, was any activity that involved his grandkids.  They were the apple of his eye and he was looking forward to the birth of the newest grandchild to be born later this year.  His patient and gentle presence will be missed at that blessed event and by all who knew him.

Richard is survived by his wife Nancy of New Prague; children, Mari Unger (special friend, Loren) of New Prague; Ethan (Laura) Unger of New Prague; grandchildren, Noah Sargent, Emma Unger, & Unger baby-to-be; brother, Larry (Kathy) Unger of North Liberty, IA; sisters, Bonnie (Greg) Novak & Diane (Ron) Johnson, both of New Prague; aunts, Bernice Tupy & Rita Ambroz, both of New Prague; mother-in-law, Dorothy Dohmen of Montgomery; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Monica Dohmen of Baudette, Steve (Wendy) Dohmen of Le Sueur, Greg (Stacy) Dohmen of New Prague, Kathleen Dohmen of Sacramento, CA, Tim (Connie) Dohmen of Gardena, CA, Jean (Todd) Listul of Brainerd, Chris (Dee) Dohmen of New Prague.  He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 10 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill with Father Kevin Clinton officiating.  Visitation will take place on Friday from 4-7 pm and Saturday morning from 7:30-9:30 at Bruzek Funeral Home.  Burial will occur at St. John’s Cemetery with lunch following at the KC Hall.  bruzekfuneralhome.com
