Students speak in support of teacher, coach

Four New Prague High School students were at the open forum of the New Prague Area School Board meeting to express support for Blake Nicols, a first-year phy ed teacher and head boys basketball coach in the district whose contract was not being renewed.

Three of the four were basketball players. Each talked about how much Nicols had come to mean to them not just as a coach.

“Mr. Nicols did not ask us to do this, we just wanted to say that we believe he’s a great coach, teacher and friend,” said Tyler Kemp, a basketbal player. Kemp said Nicols has had a big impact on him. “He’s a great role model, he’s changed all of our lives dramatically.”

He talked about how Nicols helped him last fall when he was battling depression. “He was always there for me. He talked to me, not about basketball, but about life.”

Cade Pavek said that even though he’s learned he was not coming back, Nicols was still supporting his students and players from the past season. “He still cares about the kids. He sends out text messages, trying to keep us positive.”
