Trojan boys finish perfect WCC season

The New Prague Trojan boys basketball team closed out its regular season with a pair of wins last week, over Orono and Hutchinson. That gave the team a perfect 10-0 record in the Wright County Conference East division. That gives the Trojans the conference championship for the fourth time in the five years they have been in the conference.
The Trojans (16-10 overall) earned the No. 3-seed for the Section 1AAAA tournament, which was scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 6, after this edition of The New Prague Times went to press. They were scheduled to host No. 6-seed Rochester Mayo (15-11) at 7 p.m.
If they win, they will play at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Mayo Civic Center against the winner of No. 2 Rochester John Marshall (20- 6) and No. 7 Rochester Century (14-12). The other bracket has No. 1 Lakeville North (22-4) hosting No. 8 Owatonna (7-19) and No. 4 Lakeville South (13-13) hosting No. 5 Farmington (12- 14). The winner of those two games play at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Lakeville North has won seven straight Section titles, and has met John Marshall in the championship game each of the last six years. Those two teams feature finalists for Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball award - Jacob Wahl of Lakeville North and Matthew Hurt of JM.
Trojans 65, Spartans 58 The Trojans had a slow start and trailed 12-4 early in their game at Orono Tuesday, Feb. 26. However after a timeout they turned things around and regained the lead, scoring 15 straight at one point to take a 32-16 lead before going into the locker room with a 34-22 lead.
“Orono put on a run early in the second half and it was tight throughout,” Coach Dan Peterka said. “We made enough plays down the stretch to secure the win, 65- 58.”
Senior Hunter Nielsen led the Trojans with 23 points, with Tyler Kemp adding 20. Also scoring for the Trojans were Parker Johnson and Mason Paden with 8 each, Zach Holden with 2 and Mitchell Callahan with 1.
