Trojan girls face Delano in finale Friday
Despite a loss to Waconia last week, the New Prague Trojans are still in the hunt for a tie in the Wright County Conference East division, going into the final games of the season.
Holy Family Catholic leads the conference with a 7-2 record. New Prague and Waconia are tied for second at 6-3. Waconia plays Holy Family on Thursday, Feb. 21. If Waconia wins, the Trojans can make it a three-way tie for first with a win at Delano Friday, Feb. 22.
Friday’s game is the regular season finale for the Trojans, who have a 12-12 overall record. The Section 1AAAA playoffs begin Wednesday, Feb. 27, with the top four seeds hosting home games. Coach Luke Swedberg expects his team to be placed somewhere in the 4-6 range. Farmington, at 19- 4, is expected to be the top seed and Rochester John Marshall, at 20-4 will likely be a 2-seed. New Prague’s win over John Marshall on January 5 will play to their advantage in seeding, but the Trojans lost to Lakeville South (8-16) which could hurt them. One thing they have going for them is that they have played a stronger second half of the season, going 9-5 since Christmas after starting the season 3-7.
Seeding will take place Saturday, and results will be posted online at newpraguetimes.com.
Wednesday’s winners play in the semifinals at Mayo Civic Center Saturday evening, March 2. The championship game is at 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, also at Mayo Civic Center.
