New Prague High School’s volleyball team had a chance to advance to the Section 1AAA championship match Saturday, Nov. 4. On Wednesday, Nov. 1, the No. 1-seeded Trojans (23-5) hosted No. 4-seeded Rochester Mayo (20-8) at 7 p.m. Results of the Nov. 1 match were not available as of press time for The Times.

New Prague head coach Greg Sayuk said the winner of Wednesday’s match heads to Mayo Civic Arena in Rochester Saturday, Nov. 4, for the section finals at 4 p.m. They will face the winner of No. 2 seed Lakeville North (22-7) and No. 3 seed Lakeville South (22-7) for a trip to the state tournament.

“Rochester Mayo will be a tough out,” said Sayuk about the Nov. 1 semifinal match. “They have a couple players that will be a handful for us, and they play with a lot of energy. I’m expecting a competitive match. As always this time of year, we will have to play well to move on.”

Sayuk said Saturday’s match will be against a good Lakeville team, whether it’s North or South.

“If we are able to get past Mayo, both Lakeville schools have some tremendous athletes,” he said. “They will surely play a great (semifinal) match on Wednesday. That match is a coin flip. We were able to pull out a win against Lakeville South when we played them in a tournament a couple weeks ago, so we would be confident about matching up with either of those two squads.”
