Trygestad places 2nd at Brainerd Tournament

New Prague No. 4 singles player Iris Trygestad had the top finish for the Trojans at the Brainerd Moose Tournament held Saturday, Sept. 10.

Trygestad placed second in the event which featured teams from Brainerd, Pequot Lakes, East Grand Forks, Coon Rapids, Roseau, Big Lake, and Glencoe-Silver Lake.

The No. 3 doubles team of Maggie Giesen and Abby Pint placed third. Mallory Jirik and Ellie Thomas also played one match at No. 3 doubles.

Placing fourth was Carley Motz at No. 3 singles. Ella Blackford placed sixth at No. 2 singles. Payton Peterson placed 7th at No. 1 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Mandi Becher and Anna Sharkey placed fifth as did the No. 2 doubles team of Brooke Mensing and Savannah Ryburn.

The Trojans opened the week with a 5-2 loss to Waseca Tuesday, Sept. 6. Carly Motz won at No. 3 singles (6- 2, 6-4) and the No. 3 doubles team of Maggie Giesen and Ellie Thomas also were winners (6-3, 7-5).

Bloomington Jefferson knocked off New Prague 5-2 Thursday, Sept. 8. Winners for the Trojans were Iris Trygestad at No. 4 singles (6-2, 4-6, 10-6 tiebreaker) and No. 2 doubles team of Brooke Mensing and Savannah Ryburn (6-4, 6-3).

“It was much closer than the final score seemed with several three set matches,” head coach Jamie Schoenbauer said.

Mankato East handed the Trojans a 5-2 loss Monday, Sept. 12. Trygestad won at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-0) and No. 2 doubles Giesen and Thomas were winners (6-4, 6-3).

The Trojans will play at Chaska Thursday, Sept. 15, play at the Farmington tournament Saturday, Sept. 17, and play at Southwest Christian Monday, Sept. 19.
