Just like the founders of this community started as first generation and second generation immigrants, a new round of immigrants is planting their foot in Montgomery.
Martin S. Gomez was born in La Estancia, Guatemala, which is also the name of the first bakery he opened in Bloomington, Minn., after the pandemic hit. This month, he opened up his second bakery here inside of Mike’s Discount Foods called Pan Sabroso.

Foster Care Giving
New this year, the Montgomery Fire Department will be collecting toys, new children’s clothes, and/or monetary donations ahead of the Torchlight Parade & Fireworks on Thursday, Dec. 4 for Lutheran Social Services Foster Care.
Firefighters will be stationed on the east side of 1st Street and Vine Avenue, just north of Frandsen Bank & Trust, to collect from 6-6:30 p.m.
Scott County Veteran Service Officer and Honorably Discharged Army Veteran Derek Farwell, a Montgomery native, is set to speak at the Tri-City United High School Veterans Day Program. The public is invited to attend this program in the high school’s performing arts center at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, entering at the north door (stadium side).
Early Sunday morning, a group of around 40 gathered at the Montgomery Sawmill to tour some classic structures.
The group consisted of members of Friends of Minnesota Barns (FMB). The nonprofit organization raises awareness about the loss of historic barns. According to the Minnesota Historical Society, an average of 1,300 historic barns are demolished each year in the state.
“We visit old, historic barns,” said Kathy McCann, FMB co-chair. “Most people in our group grew up on farms, or currently have barns, or just love barns.”
Le Sueur County officials met at the Montgomery Police Department on Wednesday, Sept. 24, with about 30 in attendance.
Guest speakers included two individuals from the League of Minnesota Cities (LMC), Luke Fischer, executive director, and Anne Finn, intergovernmental relations director.
LMC is an organization that helps cities throughout the state of Minnesota by promoting excellence in government through effective advocacy, expert analysis, and trusted guidance. According to Fischer, they represent 842 of the 856 cities in Minnesota.
A serious crash on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 11, left two vehicles, one towing a trailer with a vehicle on it, in disarray with at least one fatality, according to a press release by the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident happened at the intersection of Le Sueur County Roads 28 (320th Street) and 32 (211th Avenue) in rural Derrynane Township, about three miles north of Clear Lake (Lexington) at about 7:12 a.m.
