Nusbaum and Pavek ExCEL in classroom, leadership and community
Excellence in community, education and leadership.....this is what the ExCEL Award for high school juniors is all about. WEM happens to have two of those outstanding, well-rounded students who “ExCEL” in all three of these areas. Morgan Nusbaum and Jarod Pavek were nominated for the local honor by WEM staff. Their lists of accomplishments are very impressive for students yet to reach their senior year of high school. ExCEL is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens. This is the 21st year the Minnesota State High School League has sponsored the ExCEL Award. Morgan Nusbaum Morgan is the daughter of David and Tammy Nusbaum of Waterville. Nusbaum is an honor student, a two-year member of the Minnesota Honor Society, a member of the FCCLA where she serves as treasurer, and a former treasurer of her class and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has been a letterwinner in volleyball, basketball, softball, and track and field. She has been a captain and received Academic All- Conference honors in four sports. Her volunteer community service resume is very impressive. Nusbaum has more than 184 volunteer hours including working with such events as Caring Tree, Feed My Starving Children, Meals on Wheels, Vacation Bible School, Bloodmobile, Basketball and Volleyball Camps, and Prairie’s Edge Humane Society Walk for Animals to name a few. Nusbaum’s favorite quote is: “I don’t go by the rule book, I lead from the heart not the head.”
Princess Diana was the author of this quote. “I may not have been alive during her presence and passing, but her words and compassion have continued to have an impact on me and certainly the world. The qualities she possessed are what makes a great leader. As said in the quote, lead from the heart not the head, do what you feel is right, follow your heart. Arule book cannot tell you how you should lead your life, it is only determined by you.” In her letter of recommendation from teacher Crystal Lamont, Lamont said. “Morgan’s leadership and accomplishments in the classroom, in athletics, and in the community make her not only a superb candidate for the ExCEL Award, but also an exceptional role model in our WEM School community.”
