Three years ago, members of the New Prague Lions Club began volunteering their time to support Dollars for Deb, a fundraiser designed to raise money to serve cancer patients and remember Deb Bertrang-Piotter.
Saturday, Aug. 23, members of the local club will again help when Dollars for Deb holds its event at Giesenbräu Bier Co. in New Prague. The event includes a golf outing earlier in the day at New Prague Golf Club, followed by live music, a silent auction and bake sale at Giesenbräu. Members of the Lions Club will be on hand helping in any way they are needed, whether it’s checking IDs at the door, setting up or cleaning up after the event.
So far, Dollars for Deb has raised over $230,000 to help cancer patients, their families and scientists with funding for research. Information on the event is available at dollarsfordeb.org - the organization’s website.
“We couldn’t do this without them,” said Dan Puetz. He and others combined their efforts to start Dollars for Deb after losing her to glioblastoma (brain cancer) Aug. 29, 2022. The two met in 2016. She grew up in Henderson but also spent time living in New Prague and working in Mankato and New Hope.
In addition to the help the Lions provide at Giesenbräu, the Lions also help distribute Hope Bags – bags containing “a lot of things you don’t think about,” said Aaron Tesch, president of the local Lions club. The items are things cancer patients need...
