The United States Post Office announced Monday, June 16, it has identified the former Pizza Ranch site on First Street NE as its choice for the home of New Prague’s new post office.
The post office announced its “final decision” in identifying the site of the new facility – 1102 First Street NE – in New Prague. “If this location is not adequate or an agreement cannot be reached with its owner, the postal service will consider other sites,” according to a press statement from the USPS’s Minneapolis office.
The press release stated the postal service mailed a postcard to local residents and businesses Feb. 28, 2024, asking for community input. The postal service has carefully considered all concerns expressed in those discussions, as well as in comments received from the public.
“I think it’s great. There will be plenty of parking,” said New Prague City Councilor Shawn Ryan. Lack of parking is a big complaint from people about the current location, he said. “There will also be better access to the site. I’m happy for them to take an empty building and use it, especially one that is on the main drag of the city.”
“I think it’s fabulous,” said New Prague City Councilor Maggie Bass. “The fact they will have more parking spaces will be wonderful. It will also allow them more space and visibility.”
