Morristown building closing meeting set for Oct. 14

A public hearing has been scheduled to finalize the closing of the WEM Middle School School building in Morristown.

This hearing, which will be held Tuesday, October 14 in the WEM Auditorium in Waterville at 6:30 p.m., needs to be held according to State Statute Section 123B.51, subdivision 5.

The provision states that “The board may close a schoolhouse only after a public hearing on the question of necessity and practicability of the proposed closing.” The District must give published notice of the hearing “for two weeks in the official newspaper of the district.” The published notice must specify the “time and place of the meeting, the description and location of the schoolhouse, and a statement of the reasons for the closing.”

Once the meeting has been opened by WEM Board Chairman Gary Michael, Michael will give a brief overview of reasons for the meeting and then will open the meeting for public comment.

There will be no responses to the public comment, whether they are written or made during the meeting. The board will allow anyone a chance to comment before closing the meeting.

Once the closing of the meeting occurs, the board will then take the information from the public and make a decision on the building. The final decision will be made during the October 27 regular board meeting.
