Recently, more than two dozen volunteers with Crossroads Church of Elko New Market picked apples at Nelson’s Apple Farm of Webster. The apples were sent to area food shelves to help families in need.
“It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon to get out and pick apples,” said Pastor Gordon Deuel of Crossroads Church. He noted their group got to see and help how apples are washed and packed at the apple farm owned and operated by Ross and Karen Nelson. Plus, those who helped were able to have an apple dandy, a deep-fried doughnut, afterwards.
The group from Crossroads Church picked approximately $3,000 worth of apples Sunday, Oct. 26, said Duel, adding by Tuesday afternoon the apples had been sent out.
“He (Ross) was really touched to see people pick apples and for the opportunity of his crop going to good use to help others,” said Deuel.
Crossroads Church volunteers weren’t the only group out picking from the Nelson’s bumper crop this fall, Deuel said. A group was picking apples for a food shelf in Farmington, and the week before, members of the church the Nelsons belong to were out picking applies for families in need, said Deuel.
