Montgomery and St. Patrick have punched their tickets to the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament after winning their first two games in the Region 3C Playoffs last weekend.
Montgomery knocked off Webster, 4-1, Friday, Aug. 5 and edged Union Hill, 4-3, Sunday, Aug. 7 to advance to the Region 3C Championship.
The Mallards will face St. Patrick, a 6-0 opening round winner over Veseli Friday and a 5-0 shutout of Faribault Monday, Aug. 8. Montgomery and St. Patrick will play Sunday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick.

It was a night of musical appreciation for people who enjoy music and those who enjoy performing it at the Thursday, Aug. 4, Music at the Broz. The Echoes Big Band provided an evening of musical memories as they performed big band pieces from the 1930s and 1940s. The group of musicians played tunes from Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey, plus standards from the 1950s.

The New Prague School Board is drawing closer to finalizing a proposed voter levy request. At the school board’s Monday, Aug. 8, work session the consensus of the board was to have the levy in two questions and for it to be over a six year period.
At past meetings the school board has been discussing an operating levy referendum with it possibly to be part of the general election this November.

Randy Siskoff of Stockton, CA passed away on Thursday, June 30th 2022 at the age of 77. Randy was born on October 6th 1944 in New Prague, MN to Gustave and Madeline Siskoff. He was the oldest of five sons.
In Randy's childhood and teenage years he worked in the family owned business which was the New Prague Chicken Hatchery. After graduating High School he served in the US Navy on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier. In the Navy he learned his lifetime trade of being a Steel Worker and worked as a Foreman for Stockton Steel until his retirement.

Matthew David Novotny, age 38, of Minneapolis passed away unexpectedly on August 7, 2022. Visitation and celebration of Matt’s life will be held on Friday, August 12 starting at 5:00 p.m. concluding with an 8:00 p.m. prayer service at Kolden Funeral Home in Le Sueur, Minnesota. Interment will be at St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery on a later date.

A man from Rice County died in an ATV rollover on August 6.
Marvin George David, 79, was pronounced deceased at 11876 140th St, in Montgomery when rescue officials found him trapped under an ATV.
According to Rice County Sheriff Jesse Thomas, deputies, Lonsdale Fire and Rescue, and Montgomery Ambulance were dispatched to the scene at 5:53 p.m. on a report of a possible deceased person trapped under the ATV.  
“The ATV/victim was located by the landowner's friend. When responding units arrived, the male was confirmed deceased,” Thomas said.

The primary election tomorrow (August 9), runs from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Residents of Elko New Market will vote at the Elko New Market City Hall, 601 Main St.

Elmer Harry Kukacka, age 85 of Montgomery passed away at his home on August 4, 2022. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 9 from 4 pm-8 pm at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 10 at 11am with visitation one hour prior at St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery.

It was a busy and beautiful evening with sun and temperatures in the 80s for Czech Out New Prague on Thursday, Aug. 4. The annual event showcases the vast assortment of businesses, non profits, churches, and clubs in the New Prague area. The neighbors of Horseshoe Lane in New Prague gather with New Prague Police Officer Neil Flum during National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2. It was a night of visiting with neighbors and offering fun and treats for children in the neighborhood. Members of the New Prague Fire Department visited that neighborhood and the Silver Maple Bay Estates neighborhood. Erik C. Puffer, age 41, of New Prague, died peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Erik was born a twin on May 28, 1981 in Minneapolis to Dr. Charles W. and Lana R. (Erickson) Puffer. Erik attended New Prague Public Schools with the class of 2001. Living his entire life with disability, Erik’s life was full and meaningful for him and those around him. He was always happy, bringing joy to his family and caregivers. He loved his roommates and could easily be coaxed into giggles and laughter.

Sonia H. Funk, age 94, of New Prague, formerly of Minnetonka, died peacefully with her family at her side, on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Traditions of Montgomery. Sonia was born on February 4, 1928 in Minneapolis to William E. and Signe B. (Peterson) Hovey. She was raised in the Camden area of Minneapolis, graduating from Patrick Henry High School. She married Raymond A. Funk on September 6, 1947 in Minneapolis and in her first years of marriage, she worked for the phone company.

With only one night remaining in the DRS Amateur Baseball League schedule, a handful of teams are still looking to move up in the standings in order to receive a playoff bye.
The teams played Wednesday, July 27 in their final evening of regular season play.
St. Patrick (19-2 record in DRS) has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Region 6C Playoffs, which will feature eight teams from the DRS League. Montgomery (14-7) and Union Hill (13-8) have also clinched byes into the Class 3C Playoffs, which start Friday, August 5 or Saturday, August 6.
