Minnesota’s annual Miss Czech Slovak pageant will be held on Saturday, April 13 at the American Legion Club in Montgomery.
The 30th annual pageant that encourages and promotes the heritage, culture and traditions of the Czechs and Slovaks in Minnesota will be held at the American Legion Club. The evening includes a public reception, ethnic dinner, pageant and dance.

Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, west of New Prague, was offering a different take on Easter egg decorating during its Easter for Kids on Saturday, April 6. Children could draw lines on a hard boiled egg as it was spun by a machine. The young artists could then color the egg in dye. New Prague Area Community Education held its annual Daddy & Daughter Dance on Friday, April 5, at the Central Education Campus gym. There were 150 girls that came with their dads or other special person to the enchanted evening themed “I Loved Her First,” where there was dancing, games, crafts, refreshments, photos and glitter. The New Prague City Council approved four items concerning the 2019 street and utility improvement project at its Monday, April 1, meeting. The council unanimously approved a resolution accepting a bid from GMH Asphalt Corporation of Chaska to do the project. They also unanimously approved an agreement for construction engineering services with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc. Two items with Scott County turning back County Road 37 to the city were approved by a 4-1 vote.

Elko New Market business owners and residents were able to get updates from city representatives during the Elko New Market Chamber of Commerce’s Lunch and Learn, held Tuesday, March 26. Sponsored by Firehouse Grille, the soup and sandwich lunch and meeting was held in the Community Room at the Elko New Market Library.

New Prague High School’s spring play will offer a unique insight into how two sisters connect in a production that offers both comedy and drama. The play, “She Kills Monsters” will be performed at the high school auditorium, 221 12th St. NE, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6.

Judge Mark Vandelist has had enough of Le Sueur County Historical Society (LCHS).
Vandelist, who is overseeing the lawsuit between several plaintiffs and LCHS, slammed the society on Wednesday because it failed to follow his orders. He appointed a high profile attorney from Minneapolis as a Receiver to take control of the society, right the course and make sure the society does as he orders.

The US Postal Service announced late Thursday that the New Prague Post Office will reopen on Friday, March 29. The Post office was closed Saturday, March 23, due to environmental concerns, which have been taken care of. See the attached press release.

The New Prague Arts Council (NPAC) will hold its “Ides of March” fund-raising concert/dance and raffle on Friday, March 29, at the Park Ballroom. This is the fourth annual fundraiser for the NPAC and replaces the former Black Friday dance held the past three years. The event will again feature the popular ‘60s and ‘70s rock/pop horn sounds of the local band Little Chicago. Another highlight will be an appearance from GZP Productions Hilltop Radio Live Readers Theatre. This group brings back memories of those great radio soap operas of the 1920-1950s.

A feature documentary tracing life in Minnesota’s “Czech Country” (Montgomery, New Prague, Veseli, Lonsdale), 40 years in the making, will have its world premiere on Saturday, April 6, at the Minneapolis /St.Paul International Film Festival, St. Anthony Main Theater, 125 Main St. SE, in Minneapolis at 2 p.m. The documentary is called “Singin' in the Grain.” It features footage from Montgomery's classic and contemporary Kolacky Days festivals, New Prague's Dozinky Festival, and the Veseli Ho- Down.

Due to the New Prague post office being shut down temporarily, the New Prague rural routes of the Extra deliveries will not be delivered until possibly Tuesday per the postmaster. The papers are inside the post office and are not retrievable at this time. 

UPDATE - March 26
The workers have removed and cleaned all mail and packages from the New Prague Post Office, and they have either been sent for delivery or are now available for pickup.
Cleanup at the New Prague Post Office continues. Kristy Anderson, a spokesperson for the postal service, said the New Prague Post Office is expected to reopen sometime this week, possibly as early as Thursday.

Operations have been suspended until further notice at the New Prague Post Office due to safety concerns.

Members of the New Prague Veterans Memorial Committee put up a sign this week to show the progress in fundraising for the new memorial, which will be built next year just east of the New Prague Library along Main Street at Memorial Park. To date, more than $200,000 of the needed $350,000 has been raised. Nearly 30 people, from children to adults, participated in the “Dumpling Make and Take” activity at the New Prague Library the evening of Tuesday, March 12. Hosted by the Czech Heritage Club, the group was taught the finer points of making dumplings by Hana Matousek, who immigrated from the Czech Republic and has taught many cooking classes. She has also been active in different occasions concerning food, especially with the Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota.
