Dancers continue improvement in a tough conference
Tri-City United High School was host to the Big South Conference Championship last Thursday, Jan. 8. Six other teams from the conference convened at Montgomery competing in both jazz and kick.
Less than a year after they eliminated the one-time modification program that reduced a resident’s high water bill due to a system malfunction, the Montgomery City Council was discussing the issue again on Monday.
The issue was back on the council table after a Montgomery resident questioned last month why a request for a modification had been granted in May after the program had ended, when their request was denied months earlier.
The St. Patrick Irish and New Prague Orioles earned the final two state tournament berths in the Region 3C baseball tournament over the weekend.

The Region 3C playoffs began Sunday, July 29, and already two teams have qualified for the State Class C baseball tournament, which begins August 17 in New Prague, Shakopee and Jordan.
New Market and Faribault won second round games on Tuesday, July 31, to earn berths in the tournament. Details on those games will be in next week’s issue. Two more teams will earn berths with wins in the double-elimination playoffs on Friday, Aug. 3.
The American Legion Riders will be on their Legacy Run and stop in Montgomery on Saturday, Aug. 4.
The riders are collecting donations across Minnesota for the Legacy Scholarships Fund. The fund provides scholarships for the children of fallen heroes and severely disabled veterans.
The riders are making American Legion Post 79 as one of their stops Saturday, at approximately 4 p.m. If anyone is interested in making a donation, please arrive at the Post by 3:30 p.m.
The Montgomery Mallards and Union Hill Bulldogs won their Region 3C playoff games Wednesday, Aug. 1, and are each one win away from a state tournament berth.
The final two spots for the State Class C Tournament from Region 3C will be determined Friday, Aug. 3, with a pair of elimination games. St. Patrick will travel to Montgomery for an 8 p.m. game and New Prague is at Union Hill for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Montgomery defeated Shakopee 3-2 in an elimination game Wednesday, while Union Hill beat St. Benedict 10-7.
Providing safer schools was the main goal of the official Tri-City United facility safety self-assessment held on Friday, July 27.
The self evaluation involved administration from TCU, law enforcement from Montgomery, Lonsdale, Le Center, and Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Department, Le Sueur County Emergency Management Department and the TCU Facilities Coordinator.

The New Market Muskies and Faribault Lakers became the first two Region 3C teams to qualify for the State Class C Baseball Tournament with wins Tuesday evening.
In Veseli, the Muskies took a 2-0 lead in their game against New Prague, but the Orioles’ Eric Wagner belted a two-run home run to tie it. Nick Rost put the Muskies back on top with a solo home run and they Fish registered a 3-2 win.
In Prior Lake, St. Patrick took an early lead, but Faribault stormed back for a 6-2 win. Jack Helgeson had complete game win for the Lakers.
An explosion and fire that destroyed a vacant home in Montgomery early Tuesday morning on July 17, has been ruled as arson by the state fire marshal’s office.
The explosion occurred in the residence located at 104 3rd St. SW, across the street from Most Holy Redeemer Church at 2:15 a.m., and could be heard across town. It blew glass and debris across several blocks. No one was injured.
According to Montgomery Police Chief Lou Sager the fire marshal made the determination on Thursday, July 26.
Formerly of New London, Marilyn Joyce (Retzlaff) Sawall age 80, died on Thursday, July 26, 2018, in Minnesota.
She was born on December 25, 1937, in Appleton. In 1977, Marilyn moved to Minnesota with her husband and children. Marilyn had a deep love for Christ Jesus and was continually searching for ways to grow her faith. She has always had a special place in her heart for children and loved spending time with them.
She enjoyed listening to music, singing, and dancing. She also loved to travel.
